Drink Perhaps now, but better in 5 to 15 years
I have not yet had a chance to prepare my own tasting note. I will add my note soon, but meanwhile, here is a tasting note by Robert Parker; "The beautiful dark ruby/purple-colored 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits velvety tannins, a splendid opulence, broad, full-bodied flavors, superb purity, and the vintage’s tell-tale freshness and vibrancy. Les Cailloux’s tradition cuvee of Chateauneuf du Pape is a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 12% Syrah, and the rest Cinsault, aged in both tank and small barrels. It is a big wine (much in the style of the 1990), but the freshness of the fruit and aromatic complexity are more reminiscent of a vintage such as 2001. This 2007 should drink beautifully for 12-15 years. (91-93/100)"

Domaine Saint Etienne
Domaine Saint Etienne
Michel Coullomb at Domaine Saint Etienne is a grower whose wines have featured on our list for 2 or 3 years now and the quality of the wines he produces is consistently high. He has some excellent terroir, with vineyards situated in rolling hills in the extreme south-west of the Cotes du Rhone appellation. As you can see from the photo, the soil is loaded with the same type of stones ("galets roulés") found in the soil of Chateauneuf-du-Papes, about 15 miles up river. Moreover, I have rarely seen better-kept vines and healthier grapes. Monsieur Coullomb is a tall, gentle, hard-working man, who is passionately devoted to his vines and the art of fashioning honest-to-goodness wines that speak strongly of their Southern Rhone origins.

Blimey, this is lovely! An enticing nose of wild strawberries, red cherries, creamy vanilla, herbs, and an intriguing hint of citrus fruit. Warm, spiced fruit and herby flavours abound, with lovely acidity and gentle tannins. For such a lowly denomination, this is classy indeed - full of ripe, juicy fruit, yet beautifully "winey" and satisfying. The finish is considerable, too, with those warm, gently spicy flavours lingering long on the palate. Coming from vineyards which fall just outside of the Côtes du Rhône appellation, this really is a Cotes du Rhone in all but name, and is a cracking weekday wine. It would age nicely for a year or two, but why bother when it is so delicious now? Southern France in a glass!

Semi-transluscent core, fading to a ruby/pink rim. Intense, vibrant red and black fruit aromas fairly leap out of the glass - more specifically, raspberry, blackcurrant, red cherry, perhaps even a hint of white stone fruit - and a big dollop of cream! A hint of garrigue herb adds a touch of complexity. And the palate positively brims with luscious, vibrant fruit flavours, along with some meaty/savoury notes, firm, ripe tannins and ample acidity. Yet again, Michel Coullomb has fashioned a lovely red wine, which is drinking beautifully even at this stage, but will age nicely for a few years too.

La Ferme du Mont
La Ferme du Mont
Although the majority of the growers on our current list are there because I found them, a few are there because they found me. And this is one such grower. Stéphane Vedeau is based at La Ferme du Mont in Courthézon in the Southern Rhone, around which he farms in various appellations, from Cotes du Rhone through to Chateauneuf-du-Papes. He also has family winemaking connections in the Northern Rhone, as well as Provence, Languedoc and even Spain. So it seems perfectly natural that all of these family members should combine to offer a central point - or "point de collection" - from which their preferred market (i.e. small merchants like us) can choose from a large selection of wines from several different wine regions. For now, I have only tasted some of the wines from La Ferme du Mont itself and a couple of the Northern Rhone reds. And they are are - almost without exception - of a very high quality indeed. So much so that I am very much looking forward to tasting some of the Provence and Languedoc wines in the near future. For now, though, I cannot recommend the following four wines highly enough - they are simply brilliant!

A transluscent blood red core, fading to a pale pink rim - lovely colours. The nose is a riot of wild strawberries, briary, redcurrants and cherries, with additional notes of smoky incense, undergrowth and polished wood. The palate is beautifully fresh and bright, with flavours of cherry, redcurrant and cranberry, with savoury and spicy notes and a hint of bitter chocolate adding richness. A touch of tannin, ample acidity and a gently warming finish all point to a classic, elegant, and utterly lovely Cotes du Rhone. Ready to drink now, but I would wager that it will age nicely for a few years. Great stuff, from one of the southern Rhone's greatest vintages in recent memory. Try some - I promise you will not be disappointed!

Quite a youthful appearance, with a blood red core, leading to a ruby rim. The nose is serious, being both savoury and fruity at the same time. Ripe bramble and blackcurrant aromas combine with notes of beef, barnyard, undergrowth, tobacco, leather, polished wood and a hint of spiced orange - this is truly complex stuff! All of those aromas transfer through to the palate, in a rich, warming and very generous wine. This isn't Parkerised stuff, though - along with all of those bold flavours there is a good deal of elegance. The rich fruit and savoury flavours are balanced with a prickle of fine acidity and trademark rustic southern Rhone tannins, all combined in a lovely sweet/sour/savoury style. This is a wine that illustrates perfectly why Gigondas was given its own AOC status (previously only a "named" Cotes du Rhone Villages) being superior to many a Chateuneuf-du Papes I have tasted. Its balance and generosity make it eminently drinkable now, but it is truly ageworthy and a few years in the cellar would also reap rich rewards. Classic Gigondas, and a real cracker of a wine!
