Domaine de Chevalerie
Domaine de la Chevalerie
If you are seeking an escape from the homogeneity of modern red wines, then look no further. Domaine de la Chevalerie is deliberately different – eschewing both bland softness and new oak, in favour of traditional wines with potential for ageing. The Caslots of Chevalerie have long been recognised as one of the leading producers of Bourgeuil (see Hugh-Johnson et al). However, they have gone from strength so strength in recent years, twice winning the “Coup du Coeur” from Le Guide Hachette for the best wine of the Appellation. This success is vindication for the gutsy decision taken in 2001 to slash yields and renew a focus on quality. All yields were taken down from 55 to just 32 hectolitres per hectare! The estate now sells out quickly in every vintage. The grape variety (Cabernet Franc) and climate (Loire) make Bourgeuil a sort of stylistic half-way house between traditional-Bordeaux and Burgundy. As such, Chevalerie’s top-end wines from the great 2005 vintage compare very favourably to equivalents from those over-priced regions – do put some of these in your cellar.

Medium cherry red, paling to a pink rim. The nose displays aromas of raspberry and redcurrant, with notes of freshly dyed leather and pencil shavings. The palate is full of fresh, juicy red fruit flavours with a sweet and sour black cherry quality and a chocolatey, savoury richness - pronounced, but elegant tannins are married to refreshing, mouth-watering acidity. Comparatively, think Cru beaujolais with extra layers of tannin and cherry skins. Lovely stuff, and essence of Cabernet Franc. Interesting label - some might think it tacky, although it has a certain French quaintness about it!

Medium purple core, fading to a dark pink rim. The nose has raspberry, strawberry, cigar box and smoky oak aromas. The palate has blackcurrant, strawberry and cherry fruit flavours with soft, mature tannins and excellent acidity. With time in the glass, cedary aromas develop and the overall impression is quite Bordeaux-like. Decant several hours before serving, to allow the aromas and flavours to develop.

A deep purple (almost opaque) core leads to a narrow rim - this is a big, concentrated wine. The nose offers a huge whiff of raspberry, blackcurrant and dark cherry aromas, with a touch of cedar/pencil shavings. The palate is dense and rich, with bags of sweet, ripe fruit flavours. There are some healthy tannins here, but they are so ripe that it is delicious to drink already. Overall, there is great balance between sweetness of fruit and tannin, with lovely fresh acidity. Beef or lamb would be my pick for food matching, or perhaps some cheese or cured pork sausage.

Another almost opaque wine. Velvety and rich, with savoury and dark chocolate flavours complimenting black cherry and blackcurrant fruit. Yet more flavours reveal themselves with time in the glass, including notes of cinnamon, cloves and sichuan peppercorns. Monumental depth of flavour, great length, yet wonderful finesse. Faultless, stunning wine!
