Pale-ish yellow/gold, with green tinges. A complex nose, with smoky, herbaceous and floral notes allied to aromas of peach, apricot and apple. There's a touch of oily richness to the palate, which is offset by really mouth-watering lemon/lime and apple fruit and bracing acidity, with a real mineral depth. There is excellent concentration too, and the finish is deliciously tangy, with citrus peel, liquorice, herb and spice flavours lingering for some time. This is no simple quaffer - it is a serious wine, which can be drunk on its own, but really deserves to be drunk with food. Given the prices commanded by most Alvarinho wines from Portugal, this is not expensive - especially for one with a touch of maturity.

Portugal continues to deliver some really interesting (and great value) red wines, and this is a great example, with its blend of indigenous varieties. An initial whiff of savoury/meat blows off to reveal a vibrantly fruity and surprisingly complex wine, with some interesting woody/cedary notes and bags of crushed black pepper and spice-infused red and black fruit flavours. Some might say it is earthy and rustic, but therein lies its charm - and the combination of fruit, spice, gentle tannins and juicy acidity make for a deliciously drinkable and food-friendly wine. It went beautifully with a selection of English sausages, pasta and a tomato, garlic and herb sauce.

A lovely medium carmine core, fading gradually to a pale orange/mahogany rim. Even at 20 years old, there is still plenty of fruit on the nose, with delightful aromas of wild red berries and bramble, not to mention a veritable host of floral and secondary notes such as forest floor, tar and cedar. Subtle hints of violets, peppermint, herbs and spices add yet more complexity. The flavours are equally worthy of contemplation, with those complex aromas showing through on the palate, allied to peppery spice, grippy but softening tannins (Baga is famous for its tannic structure – hence its ageing potential) and mouth-watering acidity. The finish is long, dry and deliciously “sweet and sour”. All-in-all, this is a wine that demands food, though you needn’t be too choosy about what to drink it with – I can imagine it pairing equally well with red meats, spicy sausages, all manner of Italian tomato-based sauces, pizzas and mushroom dishes. For a 20 year-old wine, from what is a relatively obscure (though highly-regarded) denomination, this is a real bargain.

A limpid amber/gold colour with a definite pink rose tinge. The nose offers an absolute riot of aromas, including (but by no means limited to) orange marmalade, lime zest, roses, tea, toffee apple, apricot and a sprinkling of herbs. The palate is rich and honeyed and coats the mouth with complex, multi-layered flavours of marmalade, ginger, toffee, citrus and all manner of preserved white fruits, making for a distinctly tangy, almost sweet and sour quality. It is so beautifully balanced that everything comes together in a wine that is hard to fault, with plenty of acidity to match the luscious sweetness. The result is a relatively rich but remarkably refreshing wine, which is devilishly drinkable. Moscatel de Setúbal is one of the world's most underrated and under-valued sweet wines, and this is an absolute steal. Each bottle comes in a stylish presentation box.
