This wine is both fermented and aged in barrel, spending 12 months on its lees. The colour is gold/straw, with orange glints. The nose is crammed full of citrus, stone fruit, roasted nut and herbaceous aromas, with more than a touch of minerality and a fine cloak of toasty/buttery oak. In fact this is so enticing and complex, you could be forgiven for thinking it is a rather classy white Burgundy. Then again, the palate offers a warmth and richness that suggests warmer climes. There are some lovely flavours, with notes of spiced apple and orange zest, complemented by subtle oak and leesy flavours, and again a strong mineral streak. The rich, slightly oily texture is beautifully countered by a core of lemony acidity, whilst the finish is warming, long and generous. I have to admit that, although I'd heard that the Cape was capable of producing some really stunning Chenin-based white wines, I'd never been particularly struck by anything - until now. This really is a superb wine, which manages to be rich and generous, and at the same time truly elegant and exciting. An absolute revelation!

This is an intensely perfumed wine, displaying aromas of peaches and honey, with subtle notes of lime oil and kerosene (almost akin to a German Riesling), all wrapped up in a cloak of lightly-toasted vanillin oak. And that honeyed richness comes through on the palate, with generous flavours of ripe white fruits, cinnamon and clove, with delicious acidity and a hint of zest, almost like biting into a freshly-cut lime. Of course, there's a touch of warming alcohol, but it sits beautifully with the luscious fruit and bracing acidity, which carries through to a long, warming but juicy finish. Despite its relative weight, this isn't really a big bruiser of a wine - in my experience, bruisers tend to lack charm, and this one certainly doesn't. It isn't a hugeley complex wine, but it is a lovely drink, so if you are a lover of richly fruity, oaky but finely-balanced Aussie Chardonnay, then this is for you. I'm certainly not averse to the odd bottle or two myself - and this is an absolute bargain for the price.

This, as the saying goes, does exactly what it says on the tin, and is a classic barrel-fermented and matured Aussie Chardonnay, with just enough oak influence to make it interesting, without smothering the deliciously lime-scented, minerally fruit. For me, it bears more than a passing resemblance to a decent Maconnaise or Chalonnaise white. It shows a slight butteriness and a degree of richness, without being too mouth-filling, whilst the acidity is ample, and there's a good deal of Chardonnay fruit character (good Chardonnay rarely exhibits "other" fruit characteristics, though there's a touch of orange peel on the palate) and a healthy dose of minerality. I even sense a bit of tannin, which may be a combination of the oak aging and some decent skin contact/extract. All-in-all, it is a really nice wine - mellow and satisfying, rather than racy and thrilling - and one which I feel will get better with age.

A deep-ish blood red core, with a narrow ruby/carmine rim. The aromas suggest a rich and warming wine, almost southern Rhone in character, with notes of bramble and Christmas cake, exotic spices and polished mahogany. The palate is at the same time rich, fruity and deliciously juicy, with a tremendous weight of brambly fruit steeped in molasses and eau de vie, countered by a tremendous backbone of citrussy acidity and soft, finely-grained tannins, all of which combine beautifully in the sort of sweet and sour style that is all too rare in Aussie red wines these days. This is the sort of reassuringly traditional Shiraz that got me into wine in the first place. Lovely wine.

Still excellent
Drink Drinking well now but will age for another 5+ years
A vibrant medium-dark cherry red with a small ruby rim. The nose offers delightful aromas of redcurrants and wild strawberries, flowers, sweet spices, cinnamon and polished wood, with subtle notes of toasty oak. The oak-ageing is beautifully done, making for a delicately fragrant, rather than "woody" wine, with the floral and fruity elements the dominant factors. And the palate more than lives up to the promise on the nose, with vibrant red fruit and spice flavours, married to very fine tannins and juicy redcurrant/cranberry-like acidity. In fact, I'd go as far as saying this is a Rioja for Burgundy lovers. For a wine that is categorised on the Faustino website as "modern" (I needed to get my facts right for the tech-spec) this for me has the aromatic and gustatory profile of a reassuringly "traditional" Rioja Crianza. It is light, airy, balanced and fruity, yet wonderfully elegant and possessed of all the secondary/tertiary attributes of classic red Rioja, and I am very enamoured by it.... all I can say is Yum!

Medium-deep blood red colour, turning amber at the rim. Aromas of stewed bramble and black cherries in eau de vie, with some earthy, forest floor notes lurking in the background. Given the hot year, it is surprisingly fresh and balanced, with plenty of juicy acidity. There is also a good deal of fresh, but richly-flavoured fruit, with some interesting secondary flavours beginning to emerge. The finish is spicy and chocolatey, with a decent sweet and sour cherry finish. A nicely mature wine, which is perfect for a barbeque.

Even better
Drink Now, or over the next 10 years

Deep, impenetrable purple colour with a tiny rim – at nearly 5 years of age, it certainly isn’t showing too much sign of age. The nose offers a heady mix of aromas including black fruits, forest floor and polished wood, with a hint of orange peel and eau de vie. The palate is quite powerful and full-bodied, with mouth-filling flavours of stewed bramble and plum, allied to rich, chocolatey, slightly dusty tannins. That said, it is nicely balanced by ample acidity, whilst the fruit flavours are infused with some meaty, herby, savoury elements, which add lots of interest. The result is a quite modern wine, but not “new world” modern - it certainly isn’t one of those ubiquitous, souped-up, one-dimensional Parkerised wines that Spain produces far too much of, these days. It caresses rather than overpowers the senses and really does feel very “together”. And whilst very enjoyable to drink now, it has the structure to evolve nicely for another 5 to 10 years.

Quite a deep colour, and initially tight and closed on the nose, this opens-out nicely to reveal intense bramble and blackcurrant fruit aromas, tinged with orange zest and cedary/coconutty oak. The palate is loaded with rich and ripe black fruits, with notes of red pepper, cherry, mocha and dark chocolate. There's plenty of tannin, but with the excellent balancing acidity and fruit structure, this should age and evolve beautifully over 5 to 10 years.

Excellent - keeps really well
Drink Now, or over the next 3 to 5 years
Deep crimson colour with a narrow ruby rim. Ripe plum and blackcurrant aromas mingle with notes of orange peel, red capsicum and cedar. The palate displays an abundance of rich, ripe, juicy fruit, with cracking acidity and grippy but fine tannins. The fruit is fresh and vibrant, but there's a bit of complexity too, with hints of pepper and herbs and a rich, bitter chocolate edge to the finish. The result is a beautifully balanced, deliciously tangy, sweet and sour style of wine, which would put many a classed growth Claret or modern Spanish equivalent to shame. It's a really lovely example of a new world wine made in a distinctly traditional old world style. I fancy it will age well, too - 3 to 5 years is a conservative estimate, though I think it could go on improving and evolving for another 10. For what I believe is a relatively high-volume production wine, this really is very classy indeed.
