Les Vignes de l'Arque
Les Vignes de l'Arque
The Pont du Gard Les Vignes de l'Arque is situated in the relatively undiscovered Gard region, close to the historical town of Uzès and the amazing Roman aqueduct, the Pont du Gard. The estate is named after the 9th century chateau, l'Arque de Baron, the ruins of which can still be seen atop the nearby hill. The foothills of the Çevennes are a few miles to the west, and the vineyards of the Côtes du Rhône lie to the east. The Uzès region currently has no AOC (though a Duché d'Uzès  AOC is due to be created very soon) so all of the wines are currently designated as IGP Duché d'Uzès or Pays d'Oc. But these wines really do punch well above their weight and are characterised by lovely concentration and purity of fruit. Furthermore, coming from what can best be described as a vinous backwater, they provide brilliant value for money. The estate has 72 hectares under vine and was created by Messieurs Fabre and Rouveyrolles in 1994, before which the grapes had been sent to the local co-operative. In recent years, the wines have been made by Mr. Fabre's sons, Patrick and Arnaud, under whose control they have just got better and better. Furthermore, although not certified as such, the estate is pretty much fully organic. But the Fabres say that the beaurocracy - not to mention the expense - involved in applying for official "organic" status is simply not worth the hassle. They prefer just to let the wines speak for themselves.

If you are looking for alternatives to over-priced and under-ripe Bordeaux reds, variations on the wines of the Rhône, or the white grapes of Burgundy, Loire and the northern Rhone, the quality/price ratio that these wines offer will not disappoint. And year after year, Les Vignes de l'Arque seem to have the knack of fashioning some truly outstanding wines. The Vin de Pays Duché d’Uzès 2001, a partially barrel-aged blend of Grenache and Syrah was Jancis Robinson’s wine of the week in March 2004 – high praise indeed! The 2004 vintage of the same wine was rated by Jancis at 17/20, and "excellent" by Tom Cannavan. And the 2009 vintage is, in my opinion, the best of the lot! In addition to the range of reds and whites from Les Vignes de l'Arque, we also feature a rosé and a truly stunning late-harvested Viognier dessert wine of great complexity, which has to be tasted to be believed! Tom Cannavan described a previous vintage as "A sensational wine ...... and really quite unusual. Excellent." Again, the 2009 vintage of this wine is one of the best yet. All in all, this is a fabulous selection of wines, from a producer that really does deserve to be better known. Meanwhile, they remain our little secret!

Les Vignes de l'Arque have a knack of producing varietal wines with impeccable varietal character - and this one is a prime example. A bright, clear, medium deep ruby red colour, with aromas of ripe plums and blackcurrant leaf, some attractive herbacous and citrus notes and a hint of cedar. The palate is crammed full of red and black fruit flavours, with sweet blackcurrant and tart cranberry, combining beautifully with ripe tannins and juicy acidity, in a deliciously mouth-watering sweet and sour style. What this wine might lack in complexity is more than made up for by its sheer youthful vibrancy and drinkability. Delicious!

A clear, bright, ruby red colour, with a nose of blackcurrant, plum and tobacco, hints of coal tar and orange peel. The palate is mellow and full of fruit - black cherry and cassis - with good acidity and a nice tannic structure. Not too soft, but not too hard. This is a really well-made wine, which will give far more pleasure than either cheap Claret or soupy new-world Merlot. Lovely stuff.

Herbaceous, smoky, green apple and pineapple chunk aromas, which carry through in the mouth, with citrus flavours also to the fore. Quite steely/flinty, with tangy fruit flavours and a nice streak of acidity and a commendable finish. I'm not comparing it to Burgundy, but as a stylistic reference, it is more in the style of a Chablis, rather than the richer wines of the Cote d'Or. It is stylish, beautifully made, refreshing, and perfect to drink now, but will also age for a couple of years too.

Clear, pale straw colour, with orange glints. A delightfully intense nose, with complex aromas including apricot, orange, fresh grapes, honey and root ginger, with the perfume heightened even more by a strong floral/rose element, akin to turkish delight. Ageing in oak barrels for 9 months has also imbued it with a subtle note of oak vanillin. The flavours are moelleux, rather than full-on sweet, with the inherent richness countered by really good acidity and a touch of grape tannin. There is a core of rich, ripe, densely concentrated fruit and a touch of spicy, alcoholic warmth, whilst the finish offers a final flourish of tropical fruit and candied citrus. The oak is beautifully judged and integrates seamlessly with the fruit, making for a wine of considerable complexity. In fact, a little goes a long way, but fortunately this wine is perfectly capable of sitting in the fridge for a good many days after opening, during which it just gets better and better. Yet another on our growing list of lovely Languedoc stickies!
