Neffies
Les Coteaux de Neffies
We have been drinking the wines of the Cave de Neffiès for at least 10 years now, and the consistency offered by this brilliant small village co-operative is quite amazing. Year after year, they produce a range of wines that rival many of the best independent growers in the region. Indeed, they may just be the best co-operative in the whole of southern France. The reds are full of Languedoc "terroir", with the classic whiff of violets, black olives and herbs of the garrigue ever present in the Syrah-based wines. The range is a mixture of A.O.C (for the blends) and Vins de Pays (for the varietals). Syrah is the dominant variety in all of the Coteaux du Languedoc reds, with Grenache making up the rest, and the wines develop beautifully, and tend to come into their own at about 4 years of age. Some super white wines are also made (especially the varietals) and the Sauvignon Blanc Vin de Pays d'Oc is a regular in the annual Guide Hachette.

Pale yellow/gold, with a floral, grassy, fruity nose and a hint of root ginger. Gorgeously fresh and fruity in the mouth, with hints of apple, lemon and exotic fruits and a lovely mineral edge. A long finish, too. A fabulous wine, which is regularly starred (and several times a "Coup de Coeur") in the Guide Hachette.

Pale straw colour. Classic fresh, floral, lemony Chardonnay nose. The palate offers light, fresh, zingy fruit flavours, notably lemon/lime and peach, along with a hint of honey. Lovely balance of fresh fruit and acidity, this is very moreish wine, ideally suited to food, yet a joy to drink on its own.

Mid-gold colour, with green glints. The nose is very complex, with apple, peach and mandarin orange aromas, with additional notes of root ginger, marshmallow and a nice dollop of oak vanillin. The palate is deliciously fresh, with white fruit flavours married to a quirky mandarin orange acidity. Good persistence, too, with that lovely acidity carrying all the way to a long finish. this wine will undoubtedly age nicely for a few years, but is so good to drink now. It also lasts for days, once opened, and gets even better.

Tasting note by The Wine Gang - March 2009
"A blend of Grenache Blanc and Clairette, this wine spends just three months in barrel, yet that has marked the wine powerfully, with lots of vanilla and toast, rather out-performing orangey fruit and a mineral quality at this stage. On the palate this really comes good however, the oak still very much there, but a delightfully fresh and incisive palate of fat, lemony fruit and tangy, grapefruity acidity pushing through. 90/100"

Youthful deep purple core with a bright raspberry rim. Tremendously clean and pure on the nose, with fresh raspberry and blackcurrant aromas dominating, along with notes of undergrowth and cedar. Although Grenache accounts for only 30% of the blend, it is definitely the dominant variety here, on both the nose and the palate. It has great fruit concentration and the tannins are ripe, whilst the zingy acidity - as always with Neffies wines - makes for a beautifully balanced wine. Although quite young, it can be drunk with pleasure now, although there is certainly no hurry. The structure is certainly there for medium term ageing, and another 2 or 3 years should see it develop more secondary aromas and flavours. Lovely wine.

Deep-ish ruby red, leading to a garnet/slightly bricking rim. A nose of fresh red and black fruits, violets, cigar box and well-integrated smoky oak, with a hint of farmyard/brett. A complex palate, full of dense bramble, blackcurrant and cherry flavours, with a hint of coffee grounds and spice. As one customer has pointed out, there is an almost Claret-like quality to this wine, despite its obvious Syrah profile. Perhaps this is what good Claret tasted like in the days when it was given a good dose of "Hermitage" to add a bit of stuffing! The slightly tarry/dusty tannins are nicely offset by tangy acidity which, combined with the rich fruit, gives the wine an interesting sweet and sour quality. This wine is drinking well now, but still has a good few years left before reaching maturity. At under a tenner, this wine would stand comparison with many of its Rhone counterparts costing twice as much. Cracking stuff! 12.5%

This wine is given a long (24 day) fermentation using the carbonic maceration (whole bunch) method, after which it is aged in vat, with regular micro-oxygenation. The result is a very dark, almost opaque, wine with a nose of violets, bramble, black cherries, olives and sweet/sour/balsamic notes, all carrying through in the mouth, with liquorice and blackcurrants, and chocolate on the finish. It is rich and ripe, yet beautifully poised, with great finesse and excellent length. With firm but fine tannins and great balance, this is a really top class Syrah that will age beautifully - and an absolute bargain.
