La Ferme du Mont
La Ferme du Mont
Although the majority of the growers on our current list are there because I found them, a few are there because they found me. And this is one such grower. Stéphane Vedeau is based at La Ferme du Mont in Courthézon in the Southern Rhone, around which he farms in various appellations, from Cotes du Rhone through to Chateauneuf-du-Papes. He also has family winemaking connections in the Northern Rhone, as well as Provence, Languedoc and even Spain. So it seems perfectly natural that all of these family members should combine to offer a central point - or "point de collection" - from which their preferred market (i.e. small merchants like us) can choose from a large selection of wines from several different wine regions. For now, I have only tasted some of the wines from La Ferme du Mont itself and a couple of the Northern Rhone reds. And they are are - almost without exception - of a very high quality indeed. So much so that I am very much looking forward to tasting some of the Provence and Languedoc wines in the near future. For now, though, I cannot recommend the following four wines highly enough - they are simply brilliant!

Quite a youthful appearance, with a blood red core, leading to a ruby rim. The nose is serious, being both savoury and fruity at the same time. Ripe bramble and blackcurrant aromas combine with notes of beef, barnyard, undergrowth, tobacco, leather, polished wood and a hint of spiced orange - this is truly complex stuff! All of those aromas transfer through to the palate, in a rich, warming and very generous wine. This isn't Parkerised stuff, though - along with all of those bold flavours there is a good deal of elegance. The rich fruit and savoury flavours are balanced with a prickle of fine acidity and trademark rustic southern Rhone tannins, all combined in a lovely sweet/sour/savoury style. This is a wine that illustrates perfectly why Gigondas was given its own AOC status (previously only a "named" Cotes du Rhone Villages) being superior to many a Chateuneuf-du Papes I have tasted. Its balance and generosity make it eminently drinkable now, but it is truly ageworthy and a few years in the cellar would also reap rich rewards. Classic Gigondas, and a real cracker of a wine!

A deep, vivid, young purple colour with a tiny rim. The nose is dense, spicy and deeply fruity, with blackcurrant, bramble and black cherry flavours and even a hint of toffee apple and dark chocolate. Whilst well-extracted and hedonistic, it is elegant too. The palate is rich and bold, delivering flavours of dark fruits and exotic spices - notably cloves, cardamom and cinnamon. The tannins are savoury and chocolatey and allied to good acidity, which makes for a big, sweet and sour wine with a lovely, long, warm finish. This is a Northern Rhone wine with a certain Southern Rhone warmth - not hugely typical of its appellation, but it really is delicious!
