Domaine de Montesquiou - Jurançon
Domaine de Montesquiou - Jurançon
We discovered this estate on our 2006 trip to south-west France, on the fringes of the Pyrenées, just south of Pau. The estate comprises has 5 hectares under vine, and has been handed down from father to son since the 18th century. The current winemaker is Fabrice Bordenave-Montesquieu, a young man with a great future, if you ask me! His dry Jurançons, made from Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng and Courbu, are fresh and zingy, with lemon, lime and apple flavours, with great mineral depth, whilst the sweet Moelleux (made from Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng) is full of lemon, lime and honey, with floral notes. The Grappe d'Or is, quite simply, stunning. An over-used term in wine  parlance, for sure, but this one really is the real deal - complex flavours of honey, apple, tropical fruits and allspice, with an almost surreal, searing, lime zest acidity - a wine of incredible contrast. Jurancon may just be France's best-kept wine secret - and this particular estate may just be our greatest discovery yet. Give them a try - you will not be disappointed.

Not a rosé (rosée is French for "dew") but an ultra-pale straw/gold coloured wine, with green glints. Aromas of lemon, lime, pineapple with notes of freshly-cut grass and pea pods and all manner of mineral and floral nuances. Clean as a whistle and oh so summery! The palate offers a riot of lemon, lime and bramley apple flavours, with subtle hints of root ginger and oregano. There is a hint of richness which is offset by breath-taking (and utterly mouthwatering) acidity - steely, yes, but in no way austere. If you appreciate delicate, nervy whites – light and fresh on the palate, yet with tremendous depth of flavour - then you will you will appreciate this wine. Furthermore, whilst it is wonderful to drink on its own, it will also provide a superb match for all manner of foods. Steamed salmon or other fish dishes, seafood platter, lemon-infused chicken or a mixed salad with (say) chicken livers all spring to mind. We had it with a sweet and sour pork and vegetable stir-fry and it was a match made in heaven. It is just gorgeous to drink now, and is a worthy successor to the lovely 2006. In fact, I would say it is markedly superior. An outstanding wine from a young winemaker at the top of his game, and from an appellation that deserves to be better known. If we had to recommend just one dry white wine from our list, then this would be it.

Tasting note by The Wine Gang - March 2009
"
Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng and Courbu make up the blend of this unoaked white. We love the subtly nutty, crushed almond notes to cool orchard fruit, and the beautifully expressive palate that is filled with ripe, yet restrained fruit flavours and dashing lemon acidity. This beauty brims with vernal life force and sheer deliciousness. Would match Thai and lighter Chinese cuisine too. One of this month's Five Wines for Spring. 90/100"

Pure, bright gold colour with hints of green. This has definite aspirations to seriousness, with lemon and apple aromas lurking underneath a quite rich, oaky nose, with notes of vanilla, clove, star anise and freshly-baked bread. The palate offers the hallmark Jurançon flavours of lemon, lime and apple, yet with considerable richness, courtesy of the tannins and butteriness that comes from ageing in oak, complemented by a delicious streak of minerality. This is a lovely wine, full of restrained power and considerable breeding, which will become even more elegant with another 6 months to a year in bottle, and should evolve further over the next 2 or 3 years. But don't hang about - from an estate with just 5 hectares under vine, this is made in very small quantity.

Tasting note by The Wine Gang - March 2009
"
All of the Gang share a secret passion for the white wines of France's South West: made from typical grapes like Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng (as in this case) and generally unoaked (though this is a perhaps atypical barrel-aged cuvée). There's subtle honey and a nutty quality on the nose, with a touch of Jack Daniels. On the palate this is a very intense wine indeed, the combination of super-ripe fruit, piercing acidity and plenty of oaky vanilla. It would be an interesting one to try again in a year or two. 89/100"

Clear yellow/straw colour. Lemon, lime and honey, with floral notes and flavours of apple and lime - honied and ripe, but never cloying, with a lovely streak of acidity from the start to the finish. Not quite as shocking in its acidity as the Grappe d'Or (see below), but a delicious wine nonetheless.

This is classic sweet Jurançon, harvested in November, when the grapes have shrivelled through a combination of passerillage (dehydration) and a touch of botrytis, giving a lovely deep yellow/gold coloured wine. The nose is fabulously expressive, with notes of honey, bramley apple, pear and cinnamon. On the palate there are complex, viscous, lusciously sweet flavours of honey, apple, tropical fruits and allspice. Yet the sweetness is countered by a searing, almost shocking (yet utterly delicious) lemon, lime and mineral acidity that goes all the way from start to finish, making for a wine of incredible contrast. And the finish goes on for an age. Having tasted many of the world's great sweet wines from Sauternes, Loire, Mosel and Austria (not to mention Hungary, Australia, South Africa) I can honestly say that this one excites my taste buds like no other. The sweetness of fruit, married to that amazing acidity makes for something utterly memorable – far more than the sum of its parts, and a definite contender for my "desert island wine". And it is a bargain – a fraction of the price of most classic sweet wines, and a full 75cl bottle, at that. The word "stunning" is over-used in wine parlance, but it is hard to find a better word to describe this one - it really has that "wow factor". This is the third vintage of this particlar wine that we have stocked, and it is as good as ever (possibly even the best yet) with great potential to age and evolve for many years. A wonderful sweet wine, which is worth twice the asking price.
Now sold out - the 2007 vintage will be arriving later in the summer
