Joseph Swan Vineyards
Joseph Swan Vineyards
Yes, you’ve read it correctly - Californian wines! Although we have from time to time listed wines from countries other than France, they have generally just been odds and sods and bin-ends. But these wines from Joseph Swan Vineyards are wines that I very much hope will become a mainstay of our list. You may ask “Why California?” Well, I have tasted a good many wines from Joseph Swan in recent years, courtesy of friends who have brought them to various tasting events, and not one single example has ever failed to arouse my interest. And they have all ranged from very good indeed to absolutely outstanding, not to mention quirky and - in many cases – truly elegant.

In 1967, Joe Swan purchased an old farm near the town of Forestville in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County, comprising 13 acres of old Zinfandel vines, fruit trees and pasture, along with an old barn and a 100 year-old house. He made his first Zinfandel wine in 1968. He then set about planting some Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. He took many trips to France and visited noted vignerons, asking their advice and trying to determine why the wines were the way they were. His first few vintages were made in the cellar of the house and then later in the barn. In 1974, he erected what became known as the “tin shed” - he wasn't interested in fancy buildings, formal gardens, and other fancy trappings. Although he never had any formal training in either viticulture or oenology, Joe was a frequent lecturer at the University of California at Davis. His last vintage was 1987 and he passed away in January 1989.

Both Joe Swan and the current winemaker at Joseph Swan Vineyards, Rod Berglund (Joe’s Son-in-Law), came to winemaking by somewhat circuitous routes. You can read much more about both Joe and Rod on the excellent and very informative website www.swanwinery.com Briefly, though, Rod was introduced to Joe in the 1970’s. They became friends, and Joe began mentoring Rod in the art of winemaking. Rod made his first wine in 1979 and eventually joined Joe to help make that 1987 vintage (Joe’s last). Rod had married Joe’s daughter Lynn in 1986, thereby becoming part of the family. Rod and Lynn have remained at the helm of Joseph Swan Vineyards ever since, thereby ensuring that the winemaking traditions of this truly family-run estate continue. And I urge you to try these wines. Although not cheap, they are extremely fairly-priced and actually cost a lot less than many of California’s other top estate wines. And they are simply brilliant!

The colour is transluscent, light-to-medium raspberry/blood red, leading to a watery rim. As with just about every vintage of this wine, the nose really is the essence of fine, sensuous Pinot Noir - ripe summer fruits, exotic mixed spices, roses, leather, sandalwood and damp earth. If you tasted it blind, you could hardly mistake it for anything other than Pinot. And although you might not suggest Burgundy, then again you just might. For I have tasted wines from the Cotes de Nuits that display similar qualities of sweet, succulent fruit and exotic spices (think 1er Cru Morey-Saint-Denis or Nuits-Saint-Georges from the same vintage) although I've tasted a good few lesser ones that would kill for this level of ripeness and complexity. And that generosity of fruit really shines though on the palate, with flavours of raspberries and cream and a gentle tanginess, courtesy of soft tannins and juicy acidity. Not that it is all about the fruit, of course, for those notes of exotic spice, flowers, undergrowth and old wood add real complexity. You really do get the sense that you are drinking something very fine, despite its relative youth. And as always with Joseph Swan wines, it is even better the next day. A supremely elegant and truly lovely wine.

A pretty, medium-hued raspberry red core, fading to a cherry/pink rim. The nose offers beguiling scents of strawberries, raspberries, plum skins, citrus/orange, a hint of savoury/leather and exotic spices. In fact, those spices, married to what I assume is some old(ish) oak barrel maturation, are strongly suggestive of incense and polished wood. The palate isn't too shabby, either - a delicious mouthful of fresh red and black fruits, incense (yes, I swear you can actually taste it, too), supple, savoury tannins and a simply mouth-watering core of juicy, orangey/appley acidity. With a relatively modest 13.6% abv, this is no glass-staining Cali/Rhône monster - it is supremely balanced, elegant and thoroughly charming. And although it is eminently drinkable now, it also has the capacity to age beautifully for a decade or more - I can say this with confidence, because I have tasted one or two older vintages that were quite memorable. This wonderful wine only serves to strengthen my opinion that anyone who says that Carignan can't make charming, elegant, age-worthy, world class wine needs their head examining!

This one is quite a deep colour in comparison to the 2008 - almost opaque red/purple, with a narrow rim. It also shows a degree or so less in alcohol (12.3% as opposed to 13.5% in the 2008) and displays scents of roses and parma violets, raspberries, cassis and cream, mint, damp earth. On the palate, it appears younger, more primary and less developed, with abundant fresh red and black fruit flavours, fine but grippy tannins and vibrant, mouth-watering acidity. But the apparent youth of this wine is certainly no bar to drinking this now - one of the things I love about Joseph Swan wines is that they are always lovely to drink, whatever age they are - even when made from 100% Carignan!. But whereas the 2008 seems a little more developed and forward and absolutely ready now, this 2009 seems like more of a slow burner, with the balance and structure to develop beautifully over the next 8 to 10 years.

A semi-transluscent blood red core, fading gently to a raspberry rim. An unusual nose, combining black fruits, citrus fruit and peel, herbs and coal tar, with just a hint of trademark Swan volatile acidity and earthiness and a note of warming eau de vie. A little coaxing reveals further hints of leather, exotic spices and polished old wood. The palate is remarkably zingy and youthful, with plenty of primary red and black fruit flavours, allied to nicely grippy tannins and a mouthwatering backbone of lemony acidity. Subtle spicy and herby flavours begin to emerge after a good 2 hours in the decanter, and the fruit really begins to blossom, with the bramble and raspberry flavours turning to red cherry, redcurrant, and even a hint of cranberry. This is no rich, extracted or overly-concentrated fruit bomb - in fact it really is quite elegant and restrained, in an almost Tuscan (Brunello/Chianti/Sangiovese) way. Indeed, the transformation from opening to 2 or 3 hours down the line is quite remarkable. All of which leads me to suspect that this is a bit of a sleeper, that may take just a few years to show its real potential - but I have a feeling that it could turn into something rather special.

The colour is a fairly dense purple at the core, with a narrow ruby rim - youthful, but not opaque or soupy. The nose doesn't give an awful lot away, to begin with, but it opens-up nicely to reveal notes of raspberry, bramble and a hint of blackcurrant leaf. There are hints of spices and herbs, with a definite whiff of fresh basil and perhaps even a touch of clove. In fact, there's real complexity here, not to mention a degree of elegance which is more than a little reminiscent of a young Pinot. The palate is more expressive, with plenty of Syrah characteristics, beginning with delightfully fresh flavours of raspberry and redcurrant, and followed by a plummy/brambly richness in the middle and a bit of savouriness thrown in for good measure. The tannins are very fine and almost inobtrusive, whilst the acidity is, well....... utterly mouth-watering, like when you bite into a just-ripe nectarine. The spice/herb thing is also there on the palate, but it all remains very subtle and in the background, allowing all of that wonderful fruit to shine through. The length is impressive, but the feel-good factor is even greater(!) The bottle says 14.6% abv, but it tastes more like 13% or less, such is its elegance and cool-climate character. In fact, the more I taste this wine, the more I am falling in love with it - it is truly multi-faceted and very hard to resist. Love it, love it, love it!
