Domaine du Garinet
Domaine du Garinet
Not long before our 2011 holiday to France, I received an email from a customer, who was on holiday in the Cahors region, alerting me to a grower whose wines had impressed him. He suggested that I might want to visit the estate, but unfortunately our route south took us some considerable way east of there. Nevertheless, he had mentioned me to the owners, and following a little email correspondence with them, I asked if they would be willing to send some samples to where we were staying in Languedoc. Things worked out perfectly and samples of 3 different cuvées arrived in good time for me to transport back to the UK. We were very impressed, not to mention pleased to have "unearthed" (thanks to our intrepid customer!) a real hidden gem of a grower - and yet another on our list to be unavailable elsewhere in the UK. It is worth mentioning that the owners Mike and Sue Spring are British - which just goes to show that there are yet more "outsiders" making wine in the south of France than even we were aware of. And I have to say that they are doing a brilliant job. All of the red wines are made from 100% Malbec, and whilst they are made in a fairly traditional style, there are clearly sympathetic hands at work here, for these wines have plenty of fruit and considerable charm.

The deep, almost opaque purple colour of this wine almost belies it's sheer drinkability. For whilst it still looks and smells young and fresh, it is (as billed by the grower) made for drinking - in relative terms - relatively young. The nose is unmistakably Cahors, with intense bramble and blackcurrant fruit, cedar, iodine, roasted meat and leather aromas leaping from the glass. Pretty full-on, of course, but with rustic charm aplenty on the palate - sweet-sour cassis and black cherry fruit, meaty/savoury, a twist of black pepper here, a sprinkling of mixed herbs there, with bright acidity and chunky tannins holding everything together beautifully. And whilst some examples of young Cahors can sometimes be a bit too much like sucking on a pencil, this one is liberally dosed with sweet, ripe fruit. And much to my delight (thankfully, for I didn't manage to write anything on opening) it is one of those wines that tastes even better on day 2. It really is rather yummy!

A medium-deep garnet red colour. Whilst at the same time gently herby and savoury, this wine certainly majors on fruit, with an abundance of black cherry and bramble aromas. And whilst it still looks and smells young and fresh, it is just beginning to shake off some of the puppy fat and develop secondary notes of spiced orange, blackcurrant leaf, cedar and tobacco. And despite the deep colour, it is surprisingly elegant on the palate, with supple tannins offering just the right amount of  grip to accompany the fresh red/black fruit flavours and  juicy acidity. Nothing sticks out - it all comes together in a deliciously sweet and sour whole. You could easily drink a glass or two for its own sake, but it is equally good as a food wine, whilst it certainly has the structure to age gracefully for a few years yet. A really delicious wine.

Deep, semi-opaque garnet red colour. As with the Classique (above) the deep colour is a bit of a red herring, for there is real elegance here. The nose is really lovely, with aromas of bramble fruits, cherries, blackcurrants and dried orange peel accompanied by some delightful secondary notes of smoke, damp earth, iodine and really classy (i.e. understated oak). The fruit is bright and still beautifully fresh on the palate too, and whilst the tannins are still nicely grippy, they add to, rather than get in the way of, the overall enjoyment. There's a core of sweet, ripe red and black fruit flavours, countered by a delightful cherry kernel sourness and juicy acidity. Balanced, elegant, ageing nicely, but a good few years away from its absolute peak. All-in-all, a beautifully fresh, mouth-watering, complex wine, which is a credit to the Cahors appellation. Yummy!
