Domaine Pietri-Geraud
Domaine Pietri-Geraud
Laetitia Piétri makes great Collioure and Banyuls wines in her incredibly small and cramped cellar in the middle of the delightful and bustling town of Collioure. Harvest time must be a bit of a nightmare for this town-centre winery, with the narrow, hilly streets still thronged with tourists – and the vineyards high up in the hills above the town. This is the southern-most wine region in Roussillon (with the Spanish border just a few kilometres away) and the vineyards are set in stunning scenery, at the point where the Pyrenées tumble into the Mediterranean. Everywhere you look, vines are planted into the hillsides, up to an altitude of several hundred metres. The terroir is a mix of the soil and the sea, with the maritime influence very definitely making its mark on the wines.

Laetitia is the fifth generation of her family to tend their 30 hectares of Collioure and Banyuls, alongside her still active mother Maguy. Their vineyards are on steep terraces, dotted around the hills of Collioure, Banyuls and Port Vendres where slate soils support very old Grenache and Carignan, with more recent plantings of Syrah and Mourvèdre. A selection of dry red and white wines are made, along with several different cuvees of sweet Banyuls. Both the “standard” red and white Collioures have recently won gold medals at the Paris Wine Show. Pietri-Geraud is definitely another name to watch in this region.

Lifted aromas of strawberry and plum, combined with notes of spring flowers, violets and undergrowth. There is also a subtle, yet very definite hint of the sea (Collioure is situated right on the coast, where the Pyrenées tumble into the Mediterranean). All of these aromas combine beautifully in a wine of considerable elegance. The palate is elegant, too - in fact, very feminine - with the rich red fruit flavours balanced by juicy acidity and tannins as soft as velvet. That maritime influence again has its say - not so much salty as savoury and herby, along with a hint of liquorice and a long, softly spicy finish. This really is a lovely surprise and is very definitely the most elegant of our current crop of Roussillon wines.

Complex aromas combining honey, apple and citrus. Smoky, floral and liquorice notes add yet more dimensions to another complex wine. The palate is again rich and savoury, full of fruit and still with that lovely streak of citrus acidity and minerality. The oak tannins from the barrel fermentation add yet more depth and complexity. An extremely elegant wine, there is layer upon layer of interest here, which can only be enhanced by another year or two in bottle, although it is already drinking really well. Another brilliant wine from Laeticia Pietri and a Gold Medal winner at the 2010 Paris Show.

This wine is from the 2003 vintage, which provided ideal conditions for the production of great Banyuls sweet wines. The process for making Banyuls is called "mutage sur grains". The grapes are given a 3 week maceration and fermentation, at which point a small amount of neutral grape spirit is added to the must, which stops the fermentation. After being pressed and transferred into vat, the wine was left on its lees until the following Spring, at which point it was put into oak barrels and aged for a further 4 years before bottling. The result is a luscious, sweet, tawny/amber coloured wine with an alcohol level of just 16% (resulting in far more subtlety and fruitiness than a vintage Port, which tends to be pumped-up to 20% or more and is more "hot" and spiritous). Wonderfully hedonistic, it offers a nose of prunes steeped in eau de vie, cocoa and mocha. The palate is enormously complex, with flavours of figs and prunes, bramble, coffee and dark chocolate. Rich and full-bodied, with subtle savouriness, a touch of minerality, fine tannins and excellent underlying acidity. The finish is enormously long and tangy, warming rather than hot. A truly great sweet wine, which puts most vintage Ports to shame - and you can drink it now, with pleasure!

Tasting note by The Wine Gang - March 2009
"
Aren't we allowed to just write 'yummy' and leave it at that? This gently fortified Grenache wine spends the best part of five years ageing before release. It has a pale amber colour and wonderfully complex nose of stewed figs, walnuts, Lapsang Souchong and prunes. It washes over the palate with sweet, full fruit, all those cosseting, comforting flavours and a warming, spicy finish. Terrific - and a refrigerated bottle will stay fresh for weeks after opening. 93/100"

It is difficult to compare and contrast this particular vintage with the 2003, because they are quite similar in so many ways. Then again, 2003 was such an unusual vintage, due to the (in)famous heatwave, that the full-on richness inherent in such a vintage would be hard to replicate. Having said that, the fact that this wine is matured for no less than 4 years in old barrels, outside and exposed to the elements of all four seasons, means that there really isn't that much difference. And make no mistake, this is another delicious Banyuls. Bonfire toffee, Christmas cake, roasted mocha, prunes in eau de vie, Seville oranges, marmalade and polished old wood are just a few of the aromas which greet the senses on the first sniff, along with a definite hint of damp earth/forest floor. And whilst the flavours are a shade less dense than the 2003, there's a degree of subtlety and elegance in their place, with the aforementioned toffee and fruitcake qualities accompanied on the palate by flavours of crystallised red and black fruits and almost fresh orange acidity, whilst whatever tannin remains is tempered by a level of sweetness that is comforting, rather than cloying. There's a warming touch of eau de vie on the finish, but you almost don't notice it, because it gets buried beneath those fruit flavours, which go on and on for an age - and at just 16% abv, this is a fortified wine which majors on fruit, not alcohol. In fact, as I write this note, I'm tempted to say that I actually prefer this vintage to the 2003 (I have a bottle open, by way of comparison). It really is a quite wonderful wine.
