Chateau Rives-Blanques
Chateau Rives-Blanques
Jan and Caryl Panman lived and worked in a dozen countries on four continents before Limoux's wines and its beautiful countryside stopped them in their tracks. They bought the Rives-Blanques estate in 2001 and have since been involved in every stage of the vineyard management and wine-making process at Rives-Blanques, complementing the talents of long-time Rives-Blanques winemaker Eric Vialade and vineyard manager Mack Van Tong. The estate comprises around 20 hectares in total, with 9 hectares of Chardonnay, 2.4 hectares of Chenin Blanc, 7 hectares of Mauzac and 2 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc and they make a full range of still and sparkling wines, which are widely regarded as amongst the best in the region.

A delightfully pale, watery gold colour. The nose is almost reminiscent of Sauvignon, perhaps even hinting at Riesling, with notes of elderflower, apples, grapes and a rasp of chalky minerality, with tiny hints of basil, orange peel and liquorice. The palate is fresh, tight and zingy, combining zesty lemon, tart apple and soft peach flavours, with herby nuances and bracing, mineral-laden acidity. This is a wonderful example of what Chardonnay (with a touch of Chenin Blanc) is capable of in the higher, cooler reaches of south-west Languedoc. Wonderfully fresh, with genuine elegance.

Ultra-pale straw gold colour. Delightful aromas of honeysuckle, orchard fruits, orange blossom and lime oil, with a strong sense of minerality, along with subtle hints of flowers, herbs and freshly-cut hay. Quite rich and intensely fruity on entry, with a touch of earthiness and gentle orangey acidity, countered by strong minerality and a delightful pithiness at the end. Barrel fermentation (as is the rule for all AOC Limoux wines) has imparted a gentle florality and elegance, rather than any overt oakiness. As a blend of Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Mauzac, this is the perfect expression of what the still white wines of Limoux are all about - and is absolutely delicious.

100% Chardonnay, fermented and aged for 6 months in oak barrels (one-third new). The nose offers abundant aromas of peach, orange blossom and lime oil, with subtle herby notes and a touch of oak vanillin. The palate shows a little oak too, but it is beautifully judged and with a lot of other stuff going on lemon and lime fruit flavours with hints of spiced apples and orange zest. Quite rich, even opulent, warm and spicy, but finely poised and with some elegance. Lovely now, but also with a very promising future, with the potential to evolve nicely over the next 2 or 3 years.

Aged in barrels of up to 5 years old, but with 8% new. A subtle nose of spring flowers, peach, orange and herbs. Steely dry on the palate, with bags of Chenin character and minerality, and cracking lemony acidity, balanced by a judicious lick of oak. As always with fine Chenin Blanc, a night in the decanter does it no harm at all, over which time it develops further notes of wet wool, lemon curd, tangy apple and serious minerality. Complex stuff, and highly recommended.

An intriguing and rather delightful nose, combining spiced lemon, apple and raisin aromas with notes of honey, orange blossom, mixed herbs and a subtle whiff of oak - like summer in a glass! And whilst Mauzac is typically rather neutral, in terms of fruit aromas/flavours, this one has plenty on show, with bags of zesty citrus and white fruit flavours on the palate, wrapped around a core of tangy acidity, with a definite streak of stony minerality and just the merest hint of oak adding a touch of honey-like richness and texture. A really rather lovely surprise!

A fruity, grapey nose, with hints of sweet apples and oranges. The palate is clean and super-fresh, with a fine, persistent mousse, very slightly off-dry, with bags of fruit. 15 months ageing on its lees makes for a toasty, quite opulent style, with rich, spiced apple fruit and real mineral depth. A really cracking sparkler, and a match for many a Champagne.

A very pale rose/salmon colour, with a fine, lively mousse. The nose offers a riot of red cherry, raspberry and strawberry aromas, whilst the palate is dense, ripe and opulent, with tangy red forest fruit flavours, the merest hint of residual sugar, bracing acidity and a long, mellow finish. Whilst already quite soft and approachable, it also has the potential to age gracefully for a few years yet. A really classy sparkling rosé and a match for many Champagnes at 2 or 3 times the price.
