Chateau Rives-Blanques
Chateau Rives-Blanques
Jan and Caryl Panman lived and worked in a dozen countries on four continents before Limoux's wines and its beautiful countryside stopped them in their tracks. They bought the Rives-Blanques estate in 2001 and have since been involved in every stage of the vineyard management and wine-making process at Rives-Blanques, complementing the talents of long-time Rives-Blanques winemaker Eric Vialade and vineyard manager Mack Van Tong. The estate comprises around 20 hectares in total, with 9 hectares of Chardonnay, 2.4 hectares of Chenin Blanc, 7 hectares of Mauzac and 2 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc and they make a full range of still and sparkling wines, which are widely regarded as amongst the best in the region.

A lovely, pale salmon pink colour, with just about the liveliest mousse I've ever seen, and a very fine bead. The aromas and flavours are almost shockingly tight and austere at first. But wait.......... after some time in the glass, it really begins to open out. Ripe apple and small red fruit aromas peep through (redcurrant, raspberry, cherry), with hints of soft citrus, spring blossom, candied orange peel and wet wool. The key is obviously - at this early stage - to let the bubbles die down and to taste it as if it were a dry table wine. And then, when it is refreshed with another small pour from the bottle, it gets even better - still dry, but with more and more garrigue herb-infused fruit beginning to emerge, and massive, stony minerality. This is a wine to drink now - with food, and after some air - or to age for 3 to 5 years or more, after which it will evolve into something rather fine. Patience is the watchword.

A delightful array of aromas - ripe apples, oranges, passion fruit and lime oil, with subtle notes of garrigue herbs and white pepper. There's also more than a hint of wet stone minerality, in a really quite complex and alluring wine. The palate is oh-so fresh and vibrant, with classic cool-climate apple-tinged Chardonnay fruit, married to lemony/zesty/minerally Chenin Blanc and the more herby, non-fruit character of Mauzac. And it more than equals the sum of its parts, with ripeness of fruit and mineral nervosity in equal measure, and a long, cool, gently minty finish. And before I know it...... my bottle is almost finished. What a lovely wine, which will appeal to lovers or Burgundy and Loire alike.
