Chateau Rives-Blanques
Chateau Rives-Blanques
Jan and Caryl Panman lived and worked in a dozen countries on four continents before Limoux's wines and its beautiful countryside stopped them in their tracks. They bought the Rives-Blanques estate in 2001 and have since been involved in every stage of the vineyard management and wine-making process at Rives-Blanques, complementing the talents of long-time Rives-Blanques winemaker Eric Vialade and vineyard manager Mack Van Tong. The estate comprises around 20 hectares in total, with 9 hectares of Chardonnay, 2.4 hectares of Chenin Blanc, 7 hectares of Mauzac and 2 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc and they make a full range of still and sparkling wines, which are widely regarded as amongst the best in the region.

A delightfully pale, watery gold colour, with a touch of CO2 spritz. The nose is fresh and full of life, with aromas of orange blossom, lime oil and freshly cut apples and pears. Background notes of cinnamon and mixed herbs add a nice savoury touch. The palate is medium-rich, refreshingly zesty, and packed with ripe tree fruit and soft citrus flavours. A touch of leesy/yeasty richness is countered by mouth-watering acidity and intense minerality - that 10% Chenin Blanc really does make all the difference to the structure of this wine and gives it real lift. It really is a lovely wine for the money - and ideal for summer drinking in 2012, or to lay down for another year or two.

Aged in barrels of up to 5 years old, but with 8% new. Apple and stoney mineral aromas. A lemony palate, with some tropical fruit notes and lemon oil, with myriad non-fruit/mineral flavours. There is plenty of prickly acidity, balanced by some creamy oak. This wine develops nicely over 24 hours, to reveal further notes of wet wool, lemon curd, tangy apple and serious minerality. Another delicious (and unusual) wine from one of the most exciting Limoux growers.

100% Chardonnay, fermented and aged for 6 months in oak barrels (one-third new). The nose has aromas of oak vanillin and lime oil, with herby notes. The palate shows some oak, too, but it is very carefully done and with a lot of other stuff going on – lemon and lime fruit flavours with hints of spices and orange zest. It is fairly rich and extracted, warm and spicy. Lovely now, but with a very promising future, and will be even better with a year or two more in bottle. Full tasting note to follow.

For a relatively low dosage (4 or 5 g/l) and recently-disgorged Blanquette, this may well fool you into thinking it has some decent bottle age. Then again, it is kept for a minimum of 15 months on its lees, making for a toasty, rich, slightly yeasty wine, but full of rich, apple fruit and real mineral depth. A really cracking sparkler, and a match for many a Champagne.
